Jets Bench Justin Fields: Tyrod Taylor Starts vs. Ravens - NFL QB Shakeup (2025)

Breaking News: The New York Jets are making a significant quarterback change, benching Justin Fields in favor of veteran Tyrod Taylor. This decision comes after a string of lackluster performances from Fields, leaving fans and analysts wondering what went wrong.

It's a move that's sure to ignite debate among football enthusiasts. But here's where it gets controversial...

Coach Aaron Glenn's tone shifted dramatically following the Jets' loss to the New England Patriots. This shift in perspective made the decision clear: Taylor will take the helm against the Baltimore Ravens in the upcoming Week 12 matchup. A source from the league confirmed this information to The Athletic.

The numbers don't lie. Fields' recent play has been far from stellar. In four of the last five games, he's thrown for 120 yards or less, and in three of those, he failed to reach 55 passing yards. One particularly unfortunate play saw a pass deflect off an offensive lineman's helmet, highlighting the team's struggles. The Jets currently hold the last position in the league in passing yards per game, averaging a mere 139.9 yards. They also rank 26th in passing touchdowns with 11, 24th in completion percentage at 62.5%, and 29th in EPA (Expected Points Added) per dropback.

And this is the part most people miss...

This isn't the first time a quarterback switch was considered. In Week 8, Taylor was expected to start against the Cincinnati Bengals. However, a knee injury sidelined him, unexpectedly giving Fields a chance. Ironically, Fields had his second-best game of the season in that win. This performance allowed him to retain the starting role, even though Glenn was hesitant to discuss the quarterback situation in the following weeks.

The morning after the Patriots game, Glenn's comments hinted at the change. He emphasized the need to improve the passing game, acknowledging missed opportunities and areas where Fields needed to grow. He highlighted that the protection was good, but the passes weren't completed.

Taylor, a well-respected 36-year-old veteran, previously stepped in during Week 3 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when Fields was out with a concussion. He completed 26 of 36 passes for 197 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

Now, the big question: Will Fields be demoted to the No. 2 quarterback or even the third string? There's precedent for this. In 2022, Zach Wilson was benched and relegated to the third string. Fields is under contract for next season with $10 million guaranteed. The Jets might benefit from letting him develop behind the scenes.

Plus, the Jets might consider evaluating undrafted rookie Brady Cook from the practice squad. While Cook might not be a long-term solution, he could potentially show enough promise to return in 2026 as a backup.
