But this breakthrough matters: Somalia welcomes a Sudanese cohort awarded scholarships to pursue university studies in Mogadishu, marking a notable step in educational collaboration between the two nations.
Mogadishu, December 3, 2025 — The Somali government formally greeted a delegation of Sudanese students who have arrived to commence higher education under a scholarship program financed by Somalia itself. The welcome ceremony took place at the Ministry of Education, where Minister Farah Sheikh Abdulqadir emphasized how this initiative underscores the deepening partnership between Somalia and Sudan.
Minister Abdulqadir highlighted the enduring bonds linking the two countries and recalled Sudan’s longstanding support for Somali students during challenging times. “Sudan remains a country we will never forget. In moments of hardship, they opened their universities to our youth, and today we are proud to contribute to shaping the next generation of Sudanese scholars,” he stated.
This group represents the inaugural cohort of the new scholarship scheme. Additional Sudanese students are anticipated to join in the coming weeks as part of a broader educational cooperation program between the two states.
Officials describe the initiative as a reflection of the long-standing ties between Somalia and Sudan and a clear demonstration of Somalia’s commitment to advancing educational development both domestically and abroad. The new arrivals are slated to begin their studies at Somali National University in the near future.
